My Journey

It didn’t take long for me to realize that leading is about much more than a technical knowledge of an organization and management of people and resources. Going in I believed that leadership was exactly that, technical skills and asset management. As a result, I learned a lot of difficult lessons. In my journey I’ve pushed over sacred cows, stepped on landmines and created totally avoidable stress for myself. The results of “the leadership experience” is illustrated in data produced by the National Education Policy Center who in 2012 released that 50% of school principals leave their posts in three years, some of those are voluntary. Education Week, in 2017 released a study that revealed that nearly 30% of Principals leave in their first year; higher than any other white collar leadership profession.

My experience in leadership has pushed me to look for strategies to help me with the day to day, month to month and yearly challenges leaders face. It caused me to look at the experiences of my colleagues, read and study experts as well as have some very difficult conversations with people who have done it before me. The result? Just as I believe that all kids can succeed, I believe that all leaders can succeed, you just need the necessary tools. I am here to share with you what has worked for me. It does not matter where in the chain of command you are, you can lead effectively and create an environment where your people succeed.
